What is a EAS system?

2024-01-09

The EAS (Emergency Alert System) is a national public warning system in the United States designed to transmit emergency alerts and warnings to the public during emergencies or significant events. It was established to replace the Emergency Broadcast System (EBS) in 1997 and is managed cooperatively by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

The EAS utilizes broadcast stations, cable television systems, wireless cable systems, satellite digital audio radio service (SDARS) providers, direct broadcast satellite (DBS) services, and other media outlets to disseminate emergency alerts. These alerts can include weather-related warnings, AMBER alerts (for child abductions), local emergencies, national emergencies, and presidential emergency messages.

The system allows authorities at the local, state, and national levels to quickly communicate important information to the public, helping to ensure public safety and awareness during critical situations. EAS alerts typically interrupt regular programming to broadcast the emergency message, ensuring that people receive timely information and instructions to take appropriate actions in response to the emergency.
